I love love love dollar stores…and I especially love the fact that in Canada, everything in dollar stores actually costs a dollar (not so in NYC…at least in my experience). I bought the necklace pictured above, as well as a selection of fabulous candy bars.
My top picks for buy-it-in-Canada candy:
1. Aero: comparably boring, maybe, but unbeatable texture.
2. Coffee Crisp: love peeling them apart layer-by-layer; sheer perfection.
3. Crispy Crunch: my mom’s favorite; kind of like Butterfinger squared.
You can buy these yummies in the U.S., but they’re fairly tough to come by; I’d recommend checking out MyEnglishPantry.com or BritShoppe.com.
If you feel like taking a trip out to Queens, you can find those candies at Butcher Block in Sunnyside. They also have lots of chip brands, too. I haven’t even tried the deli meat (which looks great) since I’ve been too distracted by the snacks. I’ve been known to wander in there after work and stare at the snack wall for 30 minutes or so, trying to make up my mind as to which weird brand I want to try. Pretty cheap, too- most snacks are under $2.
There’s also a dollar store around the corner on Queens Boulevard. It has all the usual dollar store gear, although the accessories aren’t as fun as what’s pictured above. But still a great place to pick up cheap household items, and they always have the best holiday gear.
(Sunnyside tourism board, I’ll assume my check is in the mail?)
